New Zealand has its own distinctive schools of arts and crafts. The work of many artists is based on issues of identity or finding ways to respond to the environment. There is also a move towards re-interpreting traditional design as seen in the carvings on the marae (meeting place) at Te Papa, New Zealand’s National Museum, or in contemporary kete (carry-bags) made from film-stock, glass, or copper wire instead of harakeke (flax).

Whether traditional or contemporary, the dramatic New Zealand landscape is a feature, and often a component, of the work of New Zealand artists and artisans.
