Penguin History of New Zealand, The

King, Michael

Michael King's book is the lay reader's complete history of New Zealand in one single volume, suitable for general readers, senior students and tourists. Based on solid evidence and scholarship, it is intended to complement Sir Keith Sinclair's iconic The Oxford History of New Zealand, published in 1959. It is highly readable, but also analytical, starting with a description of the New Zealand environment prior to the arrival of humans, the importance of the kiore (the Polynesian rat), the first settlers (East Polynesians), the Moriori of the Chatham Islands, Abel Tasman's first encounters with Maori, and the ongoing development of Maori and Pakeha culture over 350 years. Michael King is the winner of the 2003 Prime Minister's Award for Literary Achievement in Non-fiction. Finalist for the Montana New Zealand Book Awards 2004 History category.
