MAORITANGA

New Zealand or Aotearoa, (Land of the Long White Cloud), as named by the Polynesian Maori who first settled the land 800 to 1,000 years ago, has a fascinating history. Maori had an oral tradition, so family stories and spiritual beliefs were passed down through generations by word of mouth. An ever-growing collection of literature is recording their traditions, history and beliefs, including the cultural and spiritual essence of being Maori.

In our Gifts — Maoritanga selection we also have beautiful books about legends, contemporary artists and taonga (treasures). You can find information about the Treaty of Waitangi in our History section. Our Music section has CDs and books about Maori music, which include traditional songs like Pokarekare Ana and Haere Mai.
