NATURAL HISTORY

New Zealand’s flora and fauna are unique. Much effort is going into protecting this uniqueness. Off-shore islands such as Kapiti, on the west coast out of Wellington, have been cleared of all predators allowing the regeneration of flora and the rescuing from the brink of extinction birds found only in New Zealand.

We carry an extensive range of books about the moa, the cabbage tree, the kiwi, the weta and the tuatara, as well as CDs of native bird song.

“And from the bush there came the sound of little streams flowing, quickly, lightly, slipping between the smooth stones, gushing into ferny basins and out again; and there was the splashing of the big drops on large leaves, and something else — what was it? — a faint stirring and shaking, the snapping of a twig and then such silence that it seemed someone was listening.”
