Plumb Gee, Maurice This book is one of New Zealand's most well-known novels. The protagonist, George Plumb, is one of the most memorable characters in New Zealand literature - half saint, half monster; super human in his spiritual strength and destructive in his utter self absorption. Gee's study of Puritanism - a major element in New Zealand literature and in early New Zealand society - is also a study of the authoritarian conformity of New Zealand society. Maurice Gee was the winner of the 2004 Prime Minister's Award for Literary Achievement in Fiction. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
