Trial of the Cannibal Dog, The: Captain Cook in the South Seas

Salmond, Dame Anne

Anne Salmond is Professor of Maori Studies and Anthropology at the University of Auckland and author of the acclaimed Two Worlds and Between Worlds. Her latest book, now available in paperback, is a spectacular re-creation of the three Pacific voyages of Captain James Cook. It looks at how the two different cultures - European and 'native' reacted to each other. It records the difficulties and successes arising from their different social backgrounds and explains the lasting impact of one of the greatest, most explosive collisions of the eighteenth century. The book concludes with a chapter reassessing the circumstances of Cook's death. Includes an appendix listing the punishments handed out during the voyages, an index, bibliography, author's notes, 6 maps, black and white illustrations and 15 colour plates. Also available in hardback. Winner of the Montana New Zealand Book Awards 2004 History category and the Montana Medal for Non Fiction 2004. Dame Anne Salmond was the winner of the 2004 Prime Minister's Award for Literary Achievement in Non Fiction.
