Frank Carpay

Lloyd Jenkins, Douglas

Frank Carpay, born in Holland in 1917, is a byword for post 1950 New Zealand ceramics and textiles. He immigrated to New Zealand in 1953 and began working at the Crown Lynn factory. He initially painted the factory’s own pieces but rapidly began designing and producing his own work, culminating in the Handwerk range. In 1956 he was made redundant from Crown Lynn and, failing to find work at as graphic artist, turned to teaching. In 1961 he launched Frank Carpay Designs Limited, working with screen printing and textiles. His work captured the imaginations of the youth of New Zealand, but the company was eventually forced under. Carpay then worked for R. Kendell and Co. Ltd., quickly pushing their brand to new heights, but when garment manufacture declined, was forced to screen print and manufacture corporate flags for them instead. Unable to retire fully, Carpay continued to work part-time and died in 1985. Nowadays, his pieces fetch huge prices in auction and items are held in several museums. Colour and black and white photographs show Carpay’s ceramics and textiles and the artist at work and at home.
