Nga Morehu/The Survivors: The Life Histories of Eight Maori Women Binney, Judith with Chaplin, Gillian Nga Morehu is a classic New Zealand book, first published in 1986. It is the life history of eight Maori women aged between 59 to 93 who were all brought up in small rural communities in the eastern part of the North Island - the Bay of Plenty, the East Coast or Poverty Bay. They were all associated with the Ringatu faith, a Maori religious movement founded by visionary leader Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Turuki. They also shared common experiences; arranged marriages; whanau adoption traditions; the death of a child. It was the first book in New Zealand publishing history where different Maori women spoke, in their own words, about the changing circumstances of their lives.
