Somebodies and Nobodies: Growing Up in an Extraordinary Sporting Family

Turner, Brian

This is the story of one of New Zealand's finest poets who has recently been named the 2003 Te Mata Estate poet laureate. It is also about his unusually talented sports-mad family who are known and admired for their sporting excellence. The three Turner boys grew up in Otago and Canterbury in the forties, fifties and sixties surrounded by relatives. Brian's brothers excelled at sport - Glenn is a former cricket captain and Greg is a celebrated golfer. Brian himself has played hockey and cricket, climbed mountains, fished, cycled, sailed, and still found time to write hundreds of articles, essays, reviews, TV scripts, columns and eight books of poetry. Finalist in the 2003 Montana New Zealand Book Awards Biography section.
