Hopeful Traveller, The Farrell, Fiona A two-way novel inspired by the true story of Harry Head, 'the Hermit of Hickory Bay', who broke his arm while experimenting with a flying machine in a remote bay on Banks Peninsula in the 1860's. The story concerns an island and two groups of hopeful voyagers: one in the 19th century and one post-September 11. The book is in two halves, each with it's own cover, and can be read from either end. Time may separate the two sections, but subtle links and events bring them together in an intriguing, varied novel. Shortlisted for the Montana New Zealand Book Awards 2003 Deutz Medal for Fiction. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
