Painted Garden in New Zealand Art, The Johnstone, Christopher European settlers made gardens from the moment they set foot on New Zealand soil and Maori had large cultivations around their kainga. Many settler gardens were matters of survival but as individual circumstances allowed and prosperity spread, many of these gardens became increasingly ambitious and extensive. Artists were drawn to depicting them, from the 1820s through to the present day. This collection of 100 delightful works is selected by Christopher Johnstone, the author of Landscape Paintings of New Zealand: A Journey from North to South. It tells the story of New Zealand’s gardening history as it intersected with our cultural and artistic development. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
