Oooooo!!! New Poems

Tuwhare, Hone

Odes to the bounty of Tangaroa; love poems at times wistfully heartfelt and at times gloriously intimate; joyful celebrations of Maori kai and jazz and tango rhythms — Hone's unique and iconic perspective on life shines through in every line. This book has been collated from a huge collection of Hone's recent writing, discovered sprawled over countless pieces of paper, envelopes, bank statements and the backs of shopping lists. It will give New Zealand readers not only a collection of brand new work from New Zealand’s greatest living poet, but an insight into Tuwhare's mind, as he looks out upon all the things that he loves and has loved, and upon 82 remarkable years of life.

We’ll miss New Zealand's most distinguished Maori poet, Hone Tuwhare, who died 16 January, 2008, aged 86. His affiliations were with the Nga Puhi iwi. He was the second Te Mata Poet Laureate and won two Montana Book Awards for his poetry: Shapeshifter (1998) and Piggy Back Moon (2002). In 1998, he received an honorary Doctor of Literature from Otago University and again in 2005 from the University of Auckland. In 2003, Tuwhare was given the Prime Minister's Award for Literary Achievement for poetry.
